Government Defends United Airlines Agreement Amid Opposition Criticism

The Government of Dominica has dismissed criticism from the opposition regarding its agreement with United Airlines, calling the remarks misleading and uninformed. Tourism Minister Denise Charles-Pemberton addressed the issue in a statement last Thursday, accusing opposition figures of attempting to distort reality and undermine a significant national achievement.
According to Charles-Pemberton, the arrangement with United Airlines follows globally recognized aviation industry standards, commonly used by countries worldwide to attract international carriers. She described the opposition’s comments as both predictable and baseless, arguing that similar agreements have been utilised by regional counterparts like Antigua, Saint Lucia, and Barbados to develop their aviation sectors.
For decades, destinations across the Caribbean and the world have used revenue guarantees and similar arrangements to attract international carriers. This is not some grand conspiracy; it is a standard, globally accepted practice in aviation development.

She insisted that the arrival of United Airlines in Dominica represents a milestone in tourism development, reflecting confidence in the country’s expanding travel market. The agreement, she argued, positions Dominica for sustained growth by improving air connectivity, particularly for visitors from the United States.
The opposition, she added, has continually dismissed the government’s tourism strategy, including its long-term goal of attracting 500,000 stay-over visitors per year.
“They scoff at our vision because they don’t understand ambition. Great nations do not set small goals,” she stated.
Charles-Pemberton emphasized that the government’s commitment extends beyond securing a single airline route, stating that the administration is working on broader development plans to expand Dominica’s presence in global tourism markets.
This is just the beginning. Our strategy is about ensuring Dominica remains competitive in a dynamic global environment. We will not be distracted by those who stand on the sidelines bad-mouthing the country they claim to want to lead.

She assured the public that the government remains focused on delivering results, working towards a stronger tourism industry that benefits Dominicans and visitors alike.
