Government Initiates Hot Pepper Pilot Project to Support Farmers in the Eastern Region

The Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with WUSC Dominica, has officially launched a Hot Pepper Pilot project in the Eastern Region. The Project is designed to enhance agricultural productivity and support local farmers, particularly women, youth, and Indigenous growers.

Agricultural officials indicate that the project is a focused response to the increasing demand for hot peppers, including opportunities to supply regional markets such as Trinidad and Antigua. The initiative seeks to provide seedlings and training to approximately 40 farmers and organisations, assisting them in developing sustainable production methods.

A key project element is establishing a model demonstration plot in Richmond, Castle Bruce. This plot will serve as a training ground for farmers to learn best practices in pest control, disease management, and climate-resilient farming techniques.

Under the project, approximately 240,000 seedlings are expected to be propagated and distributed, and cultivation is projected to cover 15 to 20 acres of land. The goal is to provide a consistent supply for both agro-processors, who produce hot pepper sauces and condiments, and fresh market sales.

Dr. Nadia Pacquette-Anslem, Country Coordinator of the WUSC Caribbean SAC Project, emphasised the initiative’s holistic approach. The project utilises DEXIA and connects farmers with inputs, training, and guaranteed markets, thereby establishing a complete value chain from farm to table.

The Minister for Agriculture, Roland Royer, emphasized that the project supports the broader push to revitalize Dominica’s agricultural sector and restore the country’s reputation for producing high-quality hot peppers. With ongoing support, officials hope this pilot will become a long-term success story, offering economic benefits for Eastern Region farmers and the broader Dominican economy.
