Dominica University of Medical Sciences Opens For Admission to the Public

The Dominica University of Medical Sciences will begin to admit its first batch of students in October. The new tertiary institution of medical sciences will offer degrees in medine, nursing, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, and public health sciences among others. Chairman for the university said students will be exposed to the professional, legal and ethical frameworks of medical sciences.

The chairman said the overall objective of the medical university is to train students to provide medical-related care that is “considerate, compassionate, humanistic and high in quality.” He noted undergraduates will learn general medical practice as well as problem-solving assistance to patients, families, communities and the entire healthcare system.

Although the undergraduates will study medical sciences using comprehensive curricula provided to them, they will also enjoy their studies at state-of-the-heart facilities designed for integrated medical training.

“The courses offered by Dominica University of Medical Sciences have been envisioned and created by our highly skilled interdisciplinary team of the respective educators and creative professionals – each an expert in their own field,” the university chairman said. “Together we craft curriculum with integrated multimedia elements and pedagogic visuals focused on bringing foundational concepts in medicine to life through real-world and clinical applications.”

He added that graduates from the Dominica University of Medical Sciences will grow into healthcare professionals who are able to demonstrate their skills, knowledge and attitude to patients. He said these crops of skilled graduates will meet and exceed the expectations of the people in areas of promoting, maintaining and restoring the health of individuals, families and whole communities.

The university of medical sciences is billed to be one of the most affordable medical schools in the Caribbean. The tuition fees range between US$18,000 to US$75,000 and eligible students will be able to access scholarships through the right channels. The Dominica National Student Scholarship initiative has promised to subsidize the tuition of Dominicans who get admitted into the medical university with 25% fees.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit predicted during his July budge presentation at parliament that the student population of the Dominica University School of Medical Sciences will reach 2,500 by 2030.
