Dominicans walk for cancer, as cancer society seeks to raise more funds. Thousands of Dominicans turned out to participate in an awareness walk for cancer. The event was to get both the government and international agencies involved with cancer patients and the issues they face in the country.
People from all walks of life came out for the walk for cancer event. Politicians, bankers, nurses, students, traders and patrons as well as the former chief of police took part in the walk. Some groups of participants walked from Massacre to Bayfront and others walked from Pointe Mitchel to Bayfront.
Some supporters even took part in aerobic exercises organized by the Dominica Cancer Society (DCS).
President of the Dominica Cancer Society, Yvonne Alexander, applauded as many as turned out for the walk for cancer annual event. She however disclosed that the society needs money to provide critical medical intervention to cancer patients and survivors on the island. The surgery and treatment for cancer is very expensive, and patients need help to survive the disease.
A lot of issues are very personal to individuals, depending on the person,” Alexander revealed. “They may not want to necessarily speak about it or even want people to know that they’ve been diagnosed. The newly diagnosed people need to understand that numerous others have been diagnosed before them; and these are people you can speak to and walk this journey with them. Raising funds and mobilizing financial resources is one of the main areas of focus for the DCS. Simply because so many individuals who are diagnosed can’t afford the costs of cancer treatments.”
A New York organization and several other businesses in Dominica gave donations to the DCS to enable them to continue with the good works they have been doing in assisting cancer patients with medical treatment costs.
