Skerrit asks Dominicans in Diaspora to Return Home to Witness Development

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit charged Dominicans in the diaspora to return home to witness key development in the country. He said this while addressing a cross-section of Dominicans in St. Maarten during a town hall meeting at the island located western Leeward Islands. He said it is important for everyone outside the country to come back to Dominica to see all the DLP administration has achieved over the 19 years they have been in office.

Apart from recounting all the DLP government has achieved while in office, the prime minister seized the opportunity of the jam-packed hall to reveal the future plans of the administration for the country. He spent time explaining the bid of the country to become the first climate-resilient country in the world so as to reduce the impacts of climate change on the island state. He accused the UWP of trying to achieve this feat but failed, saying the DLP will achieve it with ease within a few years.

Skerrit then spent time explaining how his government has empowered the people through quality and free education across board. He reiterated that the government has sponsored hundreds of brilliant Dominicans for further studies in Cuba, Cyprus and several other distant countries so that they can return home to utilize their skills at developing the country. He said the scholarship program has been yeilding tremendous fruits with many Dominicans doing well under the scheme.

The DLP leader further added that the government has shown love and tenderness at caring for people across all constituencies in Dominica. He said his government is not willing to disappoint the people since they have chosen to repose their confidence in the DLP party and administration. Then he went further to reel out all the government has achieved in the areas of education, tourism, economy and health among others.

Skerrit said Dominica is the only country in the Caribbean where students attend college for free.

“We not only created the state college, but we also built the new state college and we are funding the state college to the extent that today, every child in Dominica who graduates from high school has a space at the Dominica State College,” he said. “We are the only Caribbean island where you can find students have free access to community college and I keep saying to people that there is no better way of empowering poor people than by giving them education and that’s what the Dominica Labour Party has been doing for Dominicans.”

The PM said the government is working on constructing an international airport to facilitate the movement of people in the diaspora into the country. He said his administration wants to make it easy for Dominicans to come back and forth to their native country, while tourists can also take advantage of the airport to come into the country. He charged everyone to come back home to see all the government has done behind them to make Dominica great and life easy and progressive for the common people.
