UWP’s Manifesto Sets Core Priorities for New Government

The UWP has launched its manifesto for a new government if they win the coming general elections. The manifesto is christened “Real Change” and it outlines all the party would do for the people and the country once they win the coming elections. The party document was launched in Newtown where thousands of party supporters were present.

Opposition leader Lennox Linton disclosed that the manifesto was paid for by money raised by party supporters through a GoFundMe campaign. He said people contributed a total of US $16,000 which was used to prepare the manifesto. The manifesto identifies core areas for real change which the UWP government must tackle once they get to power. The party leader pinpointed areas where the new administration will focus on within the first 100 days in government.

According to the party, the new UWP government will beam its searchlight on economic hardship, social decay, and political maladministration within the first three months government. To this end, the party said they will review the CBI programme, the legislation for the Registration of Voters, the House of Assembly, and restructuring of the Public Works Corporation. Some of the major institutions to be restructured include the police force, electoral commission, civil service, integrity commission, statutory boards, and the local government as well as the judiciary among others.

The party also disclosed that Petro Caribe will be evaluated for better performance while other related companies will be audited for operational efficiency.

The UWP said they will increase pensions for the elderly from the current $300 to $500, and all public workers will enjoy salary increase. Linton said his party will also provide soft loans at low interest rates to people and businesses, and that building materials will be imported duty-free into the country.

Linton encouraged all Dominicans to “embrace the real change and also embrace a national development philosophy that is in harmony with our true Nature Island character and identity. We leave behind the political, religious and other divisions we have created for ourselves, and we discipline ourselves to become the free, united, peaceful, harmonious, self-sustaining people that we truly are.”

The UWP leader who is gunning to become Dominica’s next prime minister also expressed hopes of revamping the tourism sector so as to make the country the premier nature island in the world.
