Weather Outlook for Dominica and Lesser Antilles

Unstable conditions are expected to generate cloudiness and scattered showers and possible thunderstorm activity along with gusty winds across the area during the next 24 to 48 hours as Tropical Storm Gonzalo approaches the Southern Windward Islands.

Gonzalo continues its westward progression towards the Southern Windward Islands. At 5pm, the centre of Gonzalo was located near latitude 10.0 North, longitude 55.6 West or about 390 miles east of the Southern Windward Islands. Gonzalo continues to move quickly westward near 18mph with maximum sustained winds decreasing to near 40 mph. The current projection is for the tropical cyclone to approach the southern Windward Islands tonight.

Regardless of development, an increase in showers, which may be moderate to heavy, thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected across Dominica, as Gonzalo moves across the southern Windward Islands during tomorrow into Sunday.

Meanwhile, another active tropical wave is expected to generate shower and thunderstorm activity which could be heavy at times across Dominica, from Monday and throughout Tuesday of next week.

Moderate to rough seas are expected during the next 24 hours with waves increasing to 10.0 feet. A Small Craft Warning is now in effect. Small craft operators, all sea users and people living near the coast, particularly on the east coast, should exercise extreme caution.

The public is advised to make the necessary preparation to secure life and property and to keep informed on these systems by listening to further updates provided by the Meteorological Service.
