About Alpha Centre

Alpha Centre is the only institution in Dominica dedicated to educating children with moderate to severe learning disabilities, including conditions such as Down syndrome and autism. Established in 1974 by the St. Alphonsus Parish of the Roman Catholic Church, the centre began with just seven students and has since grown to serve around 40-50 students annually. The institution is located in Goodwill, Roseau, and has been a cornerstone of support for children with special needs on the island.

Key Services and Programs

• Educational Support: Alpha Centre offers a structured K-12 education program tailored to meet the needs of children with disabilities. The curriculum includes basic academic subjects such as English and Math and practical skills training in sewing, woodworking, gardening, and cooking.
• Therapeutic Services: The centre provides various therapeutic services to support the students' physical and emotional well-being. These include speech therapy, occupational therapy, and counselling services.
• Technological Integration: In partnership with the Universal Service Fund, Alpha Centre has integrated technology into its classrooms, providing students with tablets and internet resources to enhance their learning experience.

Community and Recognition

• Community Engagement: Alpha Centre engages the community through outreach programs and partnerships with organizations such as Sagicor, which support initiatives like autism awareness. The centre also involves parents and caregivers in the educational process, promoting a holistic approach to child development.
• Recognition: The centre has been recognized for its outstanding contributions, receiving the Service Medal of Honour during the Independence Day Parade in 2004. This accolade highlights the significant impact of Alpha Centre in promoting inclusive education and societal acceptance of children with special needs.
