Canefield Urban Council No Data
Description
TheĀ Canefield Urban Council is the local governing body for the Canefield area in Dominica. Established under the Canefield Urban Council Act of 1984, it was inaugurated in 1992 to oversee the administration and development of the Canefield community. It is one of Dominica's four municipal councils, alongside the Roseau City Council, Portsmouth Town Council, and the Kalinago Council.
Composition and Responsibilities of the Canefield Urban Council
The council comprises eight members: five elected by residents and three appointed by the Minister responsible for local government. Each member serves a three-year term. The council is empowered to make regulations and enact by-laws to govern and improve the Canefield area and address various aspects of community life.
Recent Initiatives
In March 2025, the Canefield Urban Council announced plans to initiate legal action against property owners with unpaid Land and House rates. This decision stems from increasing delinquency in property tax payments, which has hindered the council's ability to provide vital services to residents. Despite repeated reminders, many property owners have failed to fulfill their tax obligations, prompting the council to enforce provisions outlined in the Collection of Taxes Ordinance Act, Chapter 66:01 of the Revised Laws of Dominica. These measures may include the sale of properties in arrears and restrictions on defaulters leaving the state. Property owners were urged to settle outstanding payments by April 30, 2025, to avoid legal proceedings.
Role in Local Governance
The Canefield Urban Council plays a crucial role in Dominica's local government system, acting as a conduit between the central government and the local community. The council is responsible for regulating activities within its jurisdiction, undertaking development projects, and ensuring that the community is kept in proper sanitary conditions. Additionally, it serves as an agent for the distribution of public assistance to indigent community members and conveys information on central government policies and programs to local residents.
Community Engagement
The council actively engages with residents through various initiatives. For instance, it has hosted events such as graduation ceremonies for local preschools, demonstrating its commitment to fostering community spirit and supporting educational development.
Through its governance and community initiatives, the Canefield Urban Council strives to enhance the quality of life for residents, promote local development, and ensure effective administration within the Canefield area.
