Description

The Dominica Cadet Corps (DCC) is a longstanding youth organization in the Commonwealth of Dominica, dedicated to fostering discipline, leadership, and civic responsibility among its members. Established in 1910 as the Dominica Grammar School Cadet Corps with an initial group of 20 boys, the DCC has evolved over the decades to include participants from various secondary schools across the island.

Historical Milestones:

  • 1910: Formation of the Dominica Grammar School Cadet Corps.
  • 1939–1945: Three cadets served in World War II: F.J. Davenport (Royal Navy), O.S.C. Alleyne (Royal Air Force), and L.A. McCoy (Royal Air Force). A memorial in their honor stands on the Dominica Grammar School quadrangle.
  • 1971: Official establishment of the Dominica Cadet Corps, expanding to include units from Saint Mary's Academy and Londonderry Youth Camp.
  • 1977: Inclusion of female cadets following the co-education transition of the Dominica Grammar School.

Mission and Activities:

The DCC aims to instill qualities such as discipline, leadership, and civic duty in Dominican youth. Members engage in various activities, including drill exercises, first aid training, water and fire safety, and community service projects. The Corps also plays a significant role in national events and disaster response efforts.

Recent Developments:

In March 2025, the DCC hosted its annual Commanding Officer’s Parade at the Dominica Grammar School grounds, marking the commencement of the new cadet year. Additionally, the Corps held an Officers Official Dinner and Award Presentation Ceremony at the Fort Young Hotel in Roseau, recognizing the contributions and achievements of its members.

Support and Partnerships:

Alumni and supporters have formed the Dominica Cadet Corps Association International, linked to Rebuild Dominica, Inc., a U.S.-based nonprofit organization. This partnership aims to ensure the continuity and development of the DCC by engaging alumni, parents, and friends in support of the program.

Through its rich history and ongoing initiatives, the Dominica Cadet Corps continues to be a vital institution in shaping the character and future of Dominican youth.
