About Dominica Library and Information Service

The Dominica Library and Information Service traces its origins to the establishment of reading rooms in 1843 and the opening of the first official library, Victoria Memorial, in 1902. Over the years, it has expanded its services to include public libraries, a mobile library service, and the National Documentation Centre. The DLIS is committed to fulfilling the information needs of the entire population, promoting literacy, preserving the nation's documentary heritage, and facilitating the development of information and computer literacy skills.

Services and Functions of DLIS

• Public Library Services: Operates the Roseau Public Library and branches in Portsmouth, Grand Bay, and Marigot. These libraries offer reference and reading materials, and implement outreach programs for literacy promotion.
• Mobile Library Service: Provides library services to schools in the north and parts of the west coast of Dominica.
• National Documentation Centre: Manages and provides access to documents generated within Dominica and ensures the accessibility of information from outside the country.
• Archival Services: Focuses on educating the public about the importance of the nation's documentary heritage and providing access to archival collections.
