Description

The Waitukubuli National Trail, the longest hiking trail in the Caribbean, offers unparalleled exploration of the island's lush rainforests, rugged mountains, and vibrant local communities. Named after the native Kalinago word for 'Tall is her body', Waitukubuli brilliantly encapsulates Dominica's unique geographical contours.

About the Waitukubuli National Trail

The 185-kilometer trail, extending from Scott's Head in the south to Cabrits National Park in the north, is divided into 14 manageable segments. Each segment provides a unique vantage point into Dominica's natural beauty and cultural heritage, including the charming village of Belles, the scenic Layou River Valley, and the enchanting Jacko Flats.

One of the trail's highlights is the segment passing through Morne Diablotin National Park. This area is a haven for birdwatchers, hosting the island's two endemic parrot species: the Imperial Parrot, or Sisserou Parrot, and the Red-necked Parrot, or Jaco Parrot. The park's Syndicate Nature Trail, in particular, is noted for its frequent parrot sightings.

The trail further leads explorers through the impressive Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, hikers are greeted with towering volcanic peaks, fumaroles, hot springs, and stunning freshwater lakes. The Pond Casse area is a pivotal point along this trail section, connecting several routes.

Hiking the Waitukubuli National Trail

Along the Waitukubuli National Trail, hikers can catch glimpses of the elusive Black-capped Petrel, particularly in the regions surrounding Morne Diablotin National Park. The bird, locally known as Diablotin, gives the park its name and symbolises Dominica's rich biodiversity.

The trail offers more than natural wonders; it provides an intimate encounter with Dominica's cultural heritage.

The Waitukubuli National Trail comprehensively explores Dominica's diverse landscapes, vibrant wildlife, and rich cultural heritage. It is an adventure that beckons hikers and nature enthusiasts worldwide to delve deep into the heart of 'The Nature Isle.'
