Description

Youth Emergency Action Committees (YEAC) are transformative initiatives in Dominica and other Caribbean regions. They focus on youth-led community action to increase disaster resilience. Supported by Caritas Dominica and international partners like USAID, YEAC trains and prepares community youth groups to respond effectively to natural and manmade disasters.

About Youth Emergency Action Committees

Youth Emergency Action Committees operate under the guidance of Caritas Dominica and are part of a larger effort to instil a proactive approach to disaster management among the youth. These committees provide essential first aid, CPR, disaster preparedness, and emergency response training, equipping young volunteers with the skills needed to protect and assist their communities during emergencies. The members, typically between 16 to 35 years old, also engage in community outreach and sensitization, contributing to a broader understanding and preparedness for disasters within their localities.

YEAC's Training and Community Engagement

  • Comprehensive Training Programs: YEAC offers detailed training in various critical areas, including first aid, fire safety, and emergency response tactics.
  • Active Community Participation: Members participate in drills, simulations, and community awareness campaigns, enhancing the overall disaster readiness of their regions.

Goals and Impact

The primary goal of YEAC is to establish a cadre of trained young individuals who can contribute significantly to disaster risk reduction and emergency response within their communities. YEAC aims to reduce community vulnerability and increase local disaster response and resilience capacity. The project also seeks to earn and maintain the respect of local response entities and community members, strengthening the overall disaster readiness of the regions involved.

YEAC's comprehensive activities involve training, practical drills, community engagement, and sensitization efforts. These activities are designed to better prepare communities for disasters and to create sustainable structures for disaster resilience, which is crucial in regions frequently impacted by natural disasters.
