Bath Estate
Bath Estate is a dynamic residential area located in Saint George Parish within the valley of the Roseau River, northeast of the Botanical Gardens in Roseau, Dominica. Known for its historical significance in agriculture and its evolution into a vibrant residential community, Bath Estate holds a unique position in the capital’s urban landscape.
Bath Estate Historical Context & Development
Bath Estate, historically referred to as ‘Limefields’ due to its past as a major lime-producing agricultural estate, played a pivotal role when Dominica was the world’s largest lime producer in the early 20th century. The area is surrounded by mountains, providing a scenic backdrop to the community. The locality is historically known as ‘Lacoudrée’, a name still reflected today in the main road of Upper Bath Estate called Lakoudwe Drive.
The development of Bath Estate has been significantly influenced by natural disasters, notably Hurricane David in 1979, which led to the establishment of Upper Bath Estate in the early 1980s as a housing scheme for the working middle class. Further developments have continued with new housing schemes in Lower Bath Estate, characterized by their uniform construction but allowing for personalization by residents.
Infrastructure and Services
The Lands and Surveys Division of Dominica is situated in Lower Bath Estate, playing a crucial role in land and property administration. Commercial services in Bath Estate are limited, with only a few small grocery stores and several bars enhancing the local economy. The community’s layout is unique, with wider feeder lanes in Upper Bath Estate that serve multiple purposes, including parking and recreational activities like playing cricket.
Challenges and Resilience
Bath Estate’s history is marked by resilience in the face of challenges posed by natural disasters such as Hurricane David and, more recently, Hurricane Maria. The community’s response to these events has shaped its development, reinforcing its infrastructure and community bonds. Situated near significant landmarks like Morne Bruce, Bath Estate benefits from its strategic location, directly linking it to Dominica’s cultural and natural heritage.
