Bèlè
Bèlè is one of Dominica’s oldest traditional dances, deeply rooted in African mating and fertility rites. It is performed with vigorous body movements to the rhythm of the tambou drum, which guides the dancers’ steps. A male and female typically perform a stylized dance, often as part of community celebrations during Independence Day and other cultural festivals.
The Bèlè Dance in Dominica
The dance is led by a chantuelle, who sings while the chorus responds, creating a call-and-response rhythm. The accompanying lavway adds a distinct vocal harmony that enhances the vibrant energy of the performance. In addition to being performed at national celebrations like Jounen Kwéyòl, Bèlè is also an important expression of Dominican Creole culture and heritage.
