Boeri Lake

Boeri Lake is located in the heart of Dominica, just beyond the village of Laudat in Saint George Parish, within the renowned Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A volcanic landscape surrounds this stunning lake, offering visitors a glimpse of Dominica’s pristine natural beauty.

About Boeri Lake

Boeri Lake, accessible via the Boeri Lake Trail connected to Valley Road, is the highest lake in Dominica at 2,850 feet (869 meters) above the Caribbean Sea. Situated on the slopes of Morne Micotrin and flanked by Morne Trois Pitons, this almost circular, four-acre crater lake is a pristine example of volcanic activity. To the south lies Titou Gorge, with Middleham Falls nearby.

The lake is a primary source for several watercourses, including Clarke’s River, Morne Paix Bouche River, Boeri River, and Providence River. Although these rivers may not be directly connected to the lake’s surface, their origins are believed to be fed by underground sources linked to the lake, ensuring that it plays a crucial role in their formation and flow.

Visitors can reach Boeri Lake via a moderately challenging hike starting from the Freshwater Lake, approximately 1.25 miles away. The trail leads through cloud and lush mountainous forests, offering hikers breathtaking views of the island’s natural beauty and rich biodiversity.

Boeri Lake plays a crucial role in Dominica’s ecology. It is fed by rainfall and runoff, and its water levels peak between October and December. The lake is an ecological treasure and holds cultural significance for the Kalinago people, featuring prominently in local myths and legends. Known locally as ‘Letan Bwewi,’ the lake is said to be home to a mythical creature, adding to its mystique and allure.

Boeri Lake continues to draw nature enthusiasts and adventurers, contributing to Dominica’s tourism industry. It offers a tranquil refuge and a unique view of the island’s volcanic origins and lush environment.
