Bwa Mang

Bwa Mang, known scientifically as Pterocarpus officinalis, is a significant tree species in Dominica’s lush landscapes. With their spectacular buttressed roots, Bwa Mang trees are prominent along riverbanks, especially the Indian River in Portsmouth, Dominica’s widest river.

Bwa Mang trees are often mistaken for mangroves, but they are not. Found along the Indian River and other rivers and swamplands like Woodford Hill River, Bwa Mang trees support diverse ecosystems, providing habitats for crabs, iguanas, hummingbirds, and various ferns. Their majestic presence enhances Dominica’s natural heritage.
