Champagne Reef

Champagne Reef, located within Saint Luke Parish on the Caribbean Sea and just 20 minutes south of Roseau, is a natural marvel in Champagne Beach. The reef gets its name from the unique volcanic gas bubbles that rise from the seafloor, creating a “champagne-like” effect in the water. Part of the Soufriere Scotts Head Marine Reserve, this site is a prime destination for scuba diving and snorkelling, exploring its rich marine life and crystal-clear waters.

Unique Underwater Experience in Dominica

At Champagne Bay in Pointe Michel, volcanic thermal springs at the ocean floor produce perpetually bubbling waters that rise to the sea’s surface. Snorkellers and divers enjoy dazzling colours of marine life as they explore the reef, and these range from colourful water lilies, sponges, eels, sting-rays, octopuses, seahorses, batfishes, Black Triggerfish, parrotfishes, and even hawksbill turtles among others. A few lucky snorkellers have come across the wreckage of a 17th-century Spanish ship on the ocean floor, even as you see hard corals and other marine wonders. The dark volcanic sands of Champagne Beach contrast the vibrant colours of the coral reef and marine life.

Accessibility and Facilities

Champagne Reef is part of the Soufriere Scotts Head Marine Reserve, and the Waitukubuli Sea Trail passes close to the Reef area, making it easily accessible to water sports adventurers. The beach facilities at Champagne Reef are well-equipped, offering snorkel gear rentals, bathrooms, changing rooms, and a food and drink shack. This ensures visitors enjoy a comfortable and enriching experience while exploring one of Dominica’s most famous natural attractions.
