Chance

Chance is a neighbourhood in Portsmouth, Dominica, within the jurisdiction of Saint John Parish. It is positioned next to the Portsmouth Hospital and is connected to the neighbouring community of Zicack via Pembroke Street, Holland Street, and Hillsborough Street. Granby Street and Barry River border it to the south and North River to the north. Chance adds to the greater Portsmouth area’s charm because of its proximity to the Cabrits National Park and Fort Shirley, offering historical significance and natural beauty.

Development and Community in Chance

In recent years, Chance has undergone significant infrastructural developments as part of Dominica’s Housing Revolution Programme. Notably, an $80,000 road rehabilitation project was implemented to resurface the roads in Chance, enhancing its connectivity to the rest of Portsmouth. This development was intended to elevate the area to the same standard as other parts of the town, facilitating smoother transport and access.

The area is close to Benjamin’s Park, Portsmouth Fire and Ambulance Station and Roosevelt Douglas Primary School. It is also home to several public amenities, including the Portsmouth public cemetery, which offers multiple burial denominations. Chance has been identified as the location for new community support initiatives, including the PAICS Development Centre, which provides essential services for children with disabilities. This initiative highlights the government’s efforts to support the community’s social infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
