Claudius Sanford
Claudius Sanford, born in 1974, is a Dominica politician and academic of Kalinago heritage. He has been a prominent figure in the United Workers Party (UWP), serving as an Opposition Senator in the House of Assembly of Dominica from 2005 to 2009 and again from 2010 to 2011. Sanford also contested the Salybia constituency during the 2009 general election but lost to Ashton Graneau of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP). In 2017, following some local violence and disturbances in Roseau, he was arrested by the police and later released without being charged with any offences.
Claudius Sanford Education and Career
Claudius attended the Salybia Primary School and later the St. Andrews High School. He pursued further studies at the University of the West Indies, earning a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Management and an Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Planning and Development. Sanford also obtained a Physical Education and Sports certificate from the Macolin Sports Institute in Switzerland. In 2011, he received a prestigious Fulbright Faculty Development Scholarship to pursue a Master’s in Economic Policy at the University of Arkansas.
Professionally, Sanford taught economics at Dominica State College and worked in sports administration in the North Eastern District Sports Division. His commitment to education and public service is evident in his numerous roles as a teacher and a community leader.
Personal Life
Claudius Sanford is married to Anette Sanford, who is also deeply involved in public life. She made history as the first female Kalinago chief. The couple has been active in various social and political movements to improve the Kalinago Territory’s socio-economic conditions. They have children together, although specific details about their family life remain private.
Sanford continues to advocate for development in Dominica, particularly in agriculture, tourism, and education, with a strong focus on the Kalinago Territory and Salybia constituency.
