Cochrane

Cochrane, located in Saint Paul Parish, was formerly known as Hope Estate before being renamed in honour of Andrew James Cochrane Johnstone, the previous settlement owner. Surrounded by estates such as Chapara Estate, Mount Anthony Estate, Mount Pleasant Estate, Stewart Hall Estate, and Hope Estate, the village is renowned for its serene atmosphere and proximity to nature.

Cochrane’s Natural Features and Access

Cochrane is easily accessible via Imperial Road, which intersects with Cochrane Road near Springfield Estate, or from the Edward Oliver Leblanc Highway through River Estate Road, which cuts through the village. The Check Hall River borders the village to the north and the Boeri River to the south. Middleham Falls is just a 2-kilometer hike away, while the towering Morne Cabrits Marons provides a dramatic backdrop.

Safety and Infrastructure

Due to the constant risk of landslides and flash flooding, Cochrane is equipped with a hurricane shelter and the Cochrane Health Centre, ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents. This preparedness is crucial given the village’s elevated location and exposure to natural disasters.

Cultural and Ecotourism

Cochrane is home to the annual Rabbit Festival, a celebration of the village’s tradition of rabbit rearing that attracts both locals and tourists. Eco-tourism is also a significant part of the village’s identity, with accommodations such as Mountain Caapi Cottage offering visitors an immersive nature experience. Combining natural beauty, cultural heritage, and safety measures makes Cochrane stand out for exploring Dominica’s Eco-Tourism.
