Cochrane

Cochrane is a village in the Saint Paul Parish of Dominica.

It has a population of about 500 people in about 145 family households.

The former name of the village was Hope Estate. But it was renamed Cochrane in honour of the previous settlement owner, Andrew James Cochrane Johnstone. The village is located close to the Boeri River to the east, and the Morne Trois Piton National Park to the north; and it is along the road to Middleham Falls which is a major waterfall that tourists find attractive.

Cochrane village is made up of four estates – Morne Anthony Estate, Stewart Hall Estate, Middle Ham Estate, and Hope Estate.

Due to the constant risk of landslides and flash flooding, Cochrane has a hurricane shelter and a health centre.

Almost all the households in the village are served by tap water. A truck comes around weekly or fortnightly to collect garbage for disposal in the community, a fire truck and ambulance comes from Roseau to serve the village in cases of fire or medical emergency.

Cochrane is quite famous for its annual Rabbit Festival.
