Dominica Banana Employees Association

The Dominica Banana Employees Association (DBEA) was founded in December 1960 by Frederick Joseph to represent banana industry workers facing poor labor conditions and minimal protections. Its creation responded to the urgent need for organized labor representation in one of Dominica’s most vital export sectors.
Legacy and Transition from DBEA into DAWU
Due to rapid growth and expanding influence beyond the banana industry, the DBEA evolved into the Dominica Amalgamated Workers’ Union (DAWU). This transition allowed broader worker representation and laid the foundation for one of Dominica’s leading trade unions today.
