Chwek (Black-whiskered Vireo)

The Chwek (Black-whiskered Vireo – Víreo Altiloquus, Family: Vireonidae Víreos) is commonly found in the interior of Dominica. Known for its black “whisker” and repetitive song, it plays a key role in insect control while enhancing Dominica’s eco-tourism.

Chwek Characteristics

Measuring 15-16.5 cm, the Chwek has olive-grey upperparts, greyish-white underparts, and yellowish-white flanks. Its black, slightly hooked bill, red eyes, and distinctive black “whisker” make it easily identifiable. This species feeds on berries and insects.
