Dominica National Fair Trade Organization (DNFTO)

The Dominica National Fair Trade Organization (DNFTO) is a pivotal entity in the nation’s agricultural sector, dedicated to promoting fair trade practices and enhancing the livelihoods of local farmers. Established to support smallholder farmers, particularly in the banana industry, the DNFTO ensures equitable trading conditions, sustainable farming methods, and community development.

In 2009, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) provided technical support to the DNFTO by reviewing its structure and operations. This assessment aimed to enhance the organisation’s capacity to fulfill its mandate amidst the evolving challenges in the banana industry.

The DNFTO has collaborated with the government to implement initiatives that bolster the agricultural sector. In 2010, National Fair Trade Coordinator Amos Wiltshire commended the government’s efforts to assist farmers, highlighting measures such as a $1 million program through the Agricultural Industrial & Development (AID) Bank.

Despite its efforts, the DNFTO has faced challenges, including market access issues. In 2015, Winfresh (UK) Ltd suspended banana purchases from Dominica due to quality concerns, impacting farmers reliant on this trade.

The DNFTO continues to advocate for fair trade principles, striving to improve farmers’ economic well-being and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
