Solid Waste Management Project
The Solid Waste Management Project in Dominica is a critical initiative to improve waste management practices on the island. Overseen by the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC), the project focuses on waste separation, recycling, and community engagement. It aligns with the Recycle OECS Model Demonstration, launched in partnership with the OECS Commission and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD). This model aims to address plastic pollution and create a sustainable framework for waste management within the OECS region.
As part of this initiative, Dominica has implemented curbside collection for recyclable materials like glass, plastic, and tin cans, making it the only English-speaking Caribbean nation to do so. The project’s broader goals align with Dominica’s Climate Resilience and Recovery Plan (CRRP), which strives to make the country the first climate-resilient nation in the world. A strong collaboration between government agencies, civil society, and private sectors supports the initiative.
Waste Management Strategies in Dominica
The Fond Cole Sanitary Landfill, a crucial part of Dominica’s waste infrastructure, is nearing capacity, emphasising waste diversion’s importance. This project includes consultations with community groups and stakeholders, encouraging public participation in recycling efforts. Through this initiative, Dominica aims to transition from a linear waste management system to a circular economy, where waste is treated as a resource.
