Dominica’s Tallest Mountain

Dominica’s tallest mountain is the majestic Morne Diablotin, rising to an elevation of 1,447 meters (4,747 feet) above sea level. Located in the northern region of the island, it dominates the skyline. It holds the distinction of being not only the highest peak in Dominica but also the second-highest peak in the entire Lesser Antilles. Morne Diablotin is a symbol of the island’s wild, volcanic origins and is central to its ecological and cultural landscape.
Location and Features of Dominica’s Tallest Mountain
Morne Diablotin is situated within the Morne Diablotin National Park, a protected area established in 2000 to conserve its unique biodiversity. The mountain is primarily cloaked in dense montane forest and elfin woodland, with frequent cloud cover and mist that adds to its mysterious presence. It is the source of many rivers and streams that sustain life throughout Dominica’s north and west.
Ecology and Wildlife
The mountain’s untouched slopes are home to some of Dominica’s endemic species of flora and fauna, including the critically endangered Sisserou Parrot (Amazona imperialis)—the national bird of Dominica. The Jaco Parrot (Amazona arausiaca), tree frogs, lizards, and a wide range of epiphytes, orchids, mosses, and ferns also thrive in this cooler, high-altitude environment.
Hiking and Exploration
Reaching the summit of Morne Diablotin is possible via the Morne Diablotin Trail, which begins near the village of Dublanc. Though the trail is only about 2 km long, it is considered one of the most strenuous hikes in Dominica due to steep, muddy paths and thick forest. It typically takes 5 to 6 hours round-trip to complete. On a clear day, the summit offers panoramic views of Portsmouth, Cabrits National Park, and even distant islands like Guadeloupe and Martinique.
Cultural Significance
Dominica’s tallest mountain is more than a towering presence—it’s a place steeped in folklore and reverence. Nicknamed “Devil Mountain,” it stands as a symbol of strength and the deep respect Dominicans hold for nature’s might.
Morne Diablotin, Dominica’s tallest peak, represents the heart of the Nature Isle: wild, rich, and defiantly untouched.
