East Coast Road Project
The East Coast Road Project is a significant infrastructure initiative in Dominica, aiming to rehabilitate and enhance approximately 43.3 kilometers of roadways along the island’s eastern corridor. This project is a component of the Disaster Vulnerability Reduction Project (DVRP) and is funded by the World Bank, with an estimated cost of EC $127 million.
Project Scope and Objectives
The rehabilitation encompasses four main segments:
- Pont Cassé to Bois Diable
- Bois Diable to Castle Bruce
- Castle Bruce to Petite Soufrière
- Castle Bruce to Hatton Garden
Key interventions include slope stabilization, pavement reconstruction, construction of new bridges and culverts, road realignment, and improved drainage systems. These measures aim to enhance the resilience of the road network against natural disasters and climate-related events.
Progress and Timeline
As of May 2024, significant progress has been made, particularly in Lot 2, spanning from Castle Bruce to Hatton Garden. Road works in the Kalinago Territory are advancing, with completion targeted for December 2024. The project is expected to improve connectivity and stimulate economic opportunities in the region.
Economic and Social Impact
The upgraded road network is anticipated to facilitate better access to markets, healthcare, and education for residents of the eastern communities. Additionally, it is expected to boost tourism by providing improved routes to natural attractions and cultural sites, thereby contributing to the overall economic development of Dominica.
The East Coast Road Project symbolizes Dominica’s commitment to building resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding environmental challenges, ensuring sustainable growth and development for the nation.
