Fidel Grant
Fidel Grant, currently serving as Dominica’s Minister for the Ministry Public Works, Public Utilities, and Digital Economy, has played an integral role in shaping key infrastructure projects in the country, including the highly anticipated International Airport Project. His political journey started in 2019 when he was elected as the Parliamentary Representative for the Wesley constituency under the Dominica Labour Party (DLP).
Early Life and Education
Fidel Grant was born and raised in Wesley, a village on Dominica’s northeast coast. His upbringing in this rural environment deeply connected him to local agricultural practices and community development. His education in Finance and Economics provided a foundation for his early career, where he worked in Dominica’s Ministry of Finance before transitioning into the political sphere.
Career and Ministerial Responsibilities
Before taking on his current portfolio, Grant served as the Minister for the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Blue and Green Economy. In that role, he worked closely with local farmers, helping form cooperatives and tackle food security and agricultural productivity issues.
Since 2019, Grant has spearheaded various national projects, including road and bridge infrastructure improvements and the development of public utilities. One of his significant achievements is introducing e-Gate technology at Dominica’s airports, which aims to modernize the immigration process and improve the efficiency of tourism and business travel. Additionally, his efforts have been instrumental in pushing the digital transformation of Dominica’s economy.
Contributions to Geothermal Energy and Sustainability
Grant has also been a critical player in Dominica’s renewable energy initiatives, mainly through his work with the Dominica Geothermal Development Company (DGDC). The ongoing geothermal power plant in Laudat, which is expected to provide up to 7,000 kilowatts of energy, represents a critical step in reducing Dominica’s reliance on imported fossil fuels. His advocacy for this project also includes securing a $46.4 million loan from the International Development Association to ensure the project’s timely completion.
Personal Life and Public Influence
Though much of Fidel Grant’s personal life remains private, he is known for his close connection to his Wesley constituency and deep commitment to public service. His leadership has helped elevate his political influence within the Dominica Labour Party, and he continues to focus on ensuring that Dominica’s infrastructure and digital economy are developed sustainably.
