The Giant African Snail (Lissachatina fulica) is a notorious Invasive Species that seriously threatens Dominica’s ecosystems. Native to East Africa, this snail disrupts local biodiversity by rapidly consuming native plants and valuable crops, affecting agriculture and Endemic Species.

Giant African Snail Ecological Impact and Control Efforts in Dominica

Growing up to eight inches, the Giant African Snail has a diverse diet and reproduces prolifically. The Forestry, Wildlife and Parks Division and Ministry of Agriculture combat this pest through manual collection, biological agents, and public awareness campaigns. These initiatives, supported by the Environmental Protection Act (2002), aim to preserve Dominica’s natural heritage by protecting local habitats and species from the snail’s invasive impact. Community involvement remains key in managing this threat, as authorities continue efforts to prevent its spread.
