Grapefruits from Dominica are a significant part of the island’s agricultural sector, benefiting from the nation’s fertile volcanic soil, tropical climate, and sustainable farming practices. The country cultivates two main varieties of grapefruit: Grapefruit Cultivation in Dominica produces the varieties Marsh Ruby Grapefruit and White Grapefruit, both thriving in Layou  ValleyLondonderry, and the southwest coast, where citrus farming is most prominent.

Marsh Ruby Grapefruit

  • Description: Pink-fleshed, known for its sweet-tart flavour and high juice content.
  • Growing Regions: Primarily found in Layou River Valley and the southwest coast, where the climate supports optimal growth.
  • Uses: Consumed fresh, juiced, and incorporated into marmalades, preserves, and desserts.

White Grapefruit

  • Description: Pale yellow flesh, offering a tangy and slightly more acidic taste compared to pink varieties.
  • Growing Regions: Cultivated alongside Marsh Ruby Grapefruit, thriving in rich volcanic soils.
  • Uses: Eaten fresh, used in fruit salads, and processed for juices.

Economic and Agricultural Importance

Grapefruit farming contributes significantly to Dominica’s economy, with exports reaching Antigua and Barbuda, France, St. Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, and the British Virgin Islands. In 2023, the country exported 11,488 kg of fresh or dried grapefruit, generating $25,510 in revenue.

To further strengthen the industry, Dominica’s Ministry of Agriculture and international organizations like FAO and IICA provide support, training, and infrastructure to improve production. In January 2025, a Citrus Certification Facility in Londonderry was established with EC$7.8 million in funding, ensuring disease-free, high-quality exports.

Sustainability and Future Growth

Farmers employ organic and sustainable agricultural practices, including natural pest control and rainwater harvesting, to ensure long-term production. With continued government investment, international trade expansion, and improved certification facilities, grapefruit farming in Dominica is positioned for long-term success in the global market.
