Born in Dominica’s Kalinago Territory, Auguiste’s leadership tenure as Kalinago Chief lasted from 1984 to 1994 and was characterized by his dedication to preserving Kalinago’s sovereign rights and culture.
Educational Background and Career
Irvince Auguiste received his education both in Dominica and abroad. He holds a Certificate in Agricultural Studies from the Mirebeau Agricultural Training School in Grenada and a Certificate in Climate Change and Sustainable Development from the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus. His educational background has supported his advocacy work, particularly in sustainable development and indigenous rights.
Auguiste has worked in various leadership capacities, including serving on the Kalinago Council, being an active member of farmers’ cooperatives, and contributing to disaster preparedness committees. He has also been involved with the Karifuna Cultural Group, promoting Kalinago traditions, music, and heritage.
Leadership and Advocacy
During his time as Chief, Irvince Auguiste was an outspoken advocate for the rights of the Kalinago people, particularly during politically tumultuous times. In 1987, he resisted political interference from Dominica’s government under Prime Minister Mary Eugenia Charles, strengthening his reputation as a champion for indigenous sovereignty and self-determination under international law.

As a staunch advocate for cultural preservation and economic sustainability, Auguiste has worked tirelessly to promote Kalinago heritage and economic growth. He founded the Touna Kalinago Heritage Village, a key initiative emphasising sustainable tourism and education for the Kalinago people. He is also a respected figure in the Caribbean indigenous movement, serving as Vice President of the Caribbean Amerindian Development Organization, where he continues to influence policy and advocate for indigenous people’s rights.
Personal Life and Continued Work
Irvince Auguiste’s dedication to his community extends to his family. His wife and children are involved in their tourism company, Nature’s Indigenous Adventures, which promotes the Kalinago culture through tourism and educational experiences. Auguiste has remained a dedicated leader in his community, and the University of the West Indies recognized his contributions in 2019 when he received the Community Service Award.
