Jacko Flats
Jacko Flats is a historic site named after the courageous freedom fighter, Chief Jacko. The area is known for its vibrant history as the stronghold of Chief Jacko and his Maroon warriors, or “Neg Mawon“, who resisted colonial oppression during the 18th century.
Embedded within the lush landscape of Jacko Flats is the incredible feat of engineering known as the Jacko Steps. These steps, built by Chief Jacko, served as strategic pathways during conflicts, aiding the Maroons in their relentless fight for freedom. They continue to stand as a testament to his resourcefulness and bravery.
The nearby village of Belles, a crucial outpost during Chief Jacko’s resistance, and the Layou River valley offer spectacular views from the flats. These areas are deeply entwined with the history and culture associated with the Maroons.
Every year on Emancipation Day, locals and tourists alike are drawn to Jacko Flats to honour Chief Jacko’s legacy. The commemorative festivities, complete with historical reenactments and cultural performances, offer a unique insight into Dominica’s rich history of resistance and liberation.
