Jacko Steps

Jacko Steps represent a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Named after the legendary Maroon leader, Chief Jacko, the steps are a poignant tribute to his spirit of resistance against colonial oppression. Located in the scenic Layou Valley, these steps are a part of the historic Jacko Flats.

Built by the Maroon community under the leadership of Chief Jacko, the steps served as a strategic advantage during battles and negotiations. As a symbol of the Neg Mawon these steps stand as a testament to the indomitable spirit of freedom that fueled the Maroon community’s fight for liberation.

Each year during Emancipation Day celebrations, Jacko Steps is remembered for honoring the legacy of Chief Jacko and the Maroon community. Festivities include local music, dance, and traditional ceremonies, drawing visitors from all over Dominica and beyond.
