Jean-Baptiste House
Jean-Baptiste House is a notable building on Old Street in Roseau, Dominica’s capital. This structure serves as the office for the Consulting Engineers Partnership (CEP), a prominent regional engineering firm. The Dominica Board of Engineering also utilises this location for administrative purposes, including distributing and collecting application forms for engineering registration.
Jean-Baptiste House: A Historic Landmark
The building’s historical significance is highlighted by its association with the Bois Cotlette Estate, one of Dominica’s oldest and most intact colonial plantations. In 1823, Jean Baptiste Dupigney, the nearby Morne Rouge Estate manager, acquired Bois Cotlette Plantation. To manage financial constraints, he sold most of the estate’s enslaved labourers in 1826, reducing their number to twenty. Despite these challenges, Dupigney continued limited coffee, sugar, molasses, and rum production.
Today, Jean-Baptiste House stands as evidence of Dominica’s rich architectural heritage and its ongoing commitment to professional development in engineering and related fields.
