Jumbie Apricot
The Jumbie Apricot is a local nickname in Dominica for the Cannonball Tree (Couroupita guianensis) fruit. This name was given because the tree’s large, round fruits resemble the Mammee Apple, which is sometimes referred to as “apricot” in Dominica. The tree is admired for its ornamental value. It is often found in places like Dominica West Coast Villages, towards the Interior of Dominica, Kalinago Territory and the Dominica Botanic Gardens, where the fine specimens draw attention with distinctive flowers and cannonball-like fruits.
The connection to Jumbie reflects the Caribbean folklore of spiritual beings associated with nature, adding a layer of cultural mystique to the tree.
