Kertist A Augustus

Kertist Alphancous Augustus (August 2, 1947 – July 9, 2021) was a prominent figure in Dominica, recognized for his significant contributions to labour rights and social justice, having the Kertist Augustus Foundation continue his vision. Born to Harry and Sylvia Augustus and grew up in Long Lane, Roseau, he was the eldest of 13 siblings. Known for his easy-going and sympathetic nature, Kertist was a listener and advisor from a young age.

Kertist A. Augustus had a profound impact on labour rights in Dominica. Educated at the Roseau Boys School, Wesley High School, and the Dominica Grammar School, he excelled academically and was an outstanding athlete. He represented the Dominica Grammar School in athletics, football, and cricket and was selected to join the Dominica National Cricket Team.

Career and Achievements

Kertist began his career in the public service, and he is attached to the Postal Services Division. In 1970, he succeeded Patrick Roland John as General Secretary of the Waterfront and Allied Workers Union (WAWU). His leadership improved working conditions, wages, and benefits for workers, and he played a key role in shaping labour policies. In 1981, he became the General Secretary of the Caribbean Congress of Labour (CCL), serving for eighteen years and influencing labour policies across the Caribbean.

Kertist served as an Opposition Senator from November 8, 1978, to June 26, 1979, and again from July 2, 1979, to April 27, 1980, during the First Parliament under the Commonwealth of Dominica Constitution Order of 1978. This period followed Dominica’s political independence from Britain on November 3, 1978.

Contributions to Labor Rights

Kertist attended numerous training programs, gaining expertise in Basic Trade Unionism, Labor Economics, Industrial Relations, and Collective Bargaining. His certifications include Theory and Practices of Social Security, Industry Management, and Supervisory Management from the Barbados Community College. His leadership in the WAWU led to significant improvements in workers’ rights, including better working conditions, shorter hours, increased wages, improved sick benefits, and more annual leave entitlements.

Kertist’s impact extended beyond labour rights. He was a devout Roman Catholic and an avid sportsman, playing cricket and football in his youth. He was known for his honesty, integrity, and tireless work ethic, leaving a lasting legacy of service and dedication. He actively supported and promoted educational initiatives, contributing to the development of the Community High School and other academic institutions in Dominica.

Personal Life and Legacy

Kertist Augustus passed away on July 9, 2021, at the age of 73. He is survived by his wife, Lyris, and children Kertiste, Brenda, and Igna, as well as his stepdaughter Sharon and adopted daughter Shanice. Upon his return to Dominica in 1998, he was elected President of the WAWU and continued serving the union as Secretary-Treasurer until his death. His contributions to labor rights, social justice, and community service have left an indelible mark on Dominica.
