Layou River
The Layou River is Dominica’s longest, flowing from the island’s interior near the Central Forest Reserve and making its way westward to meet the Caribbean Sea near the village of St. Joseph. The river spans 27.6 km (17.1 miles) and is known for its picturesque landscapes and natural features, including hot springs and pockets of calm pools ideal for bathing and tubing. Visitors can engage in kayaking and river tubing, providing a thrilling yet serene experience as they drift along the river’s gentle rapids through lush, tropical foliage.
Adventure and Scenic Beauty
The Layou River is a hotspot for adventure tourism, where thrill-seekers can kayak or tube through its lively waters, surrounded by the beauty of Dominica’s rainforests. The river also provides several calm spots for swimming, including a famous natural hot water pool known as Glo Cho. However, its accessibility may vary due to weather conditions like those brought on by tropical storms. The river is frequently used for eco-tourism, and many guided tours take visitors along the river, offering a glimpse into Dominica’s vibrant ecosystems and cultural heritage.
