Lennard “Pappy” Baptiste (December 23, 1938 – November 2, 2024) was born in Castle Bruce to Dalphine Bannis, a farmer, and Pappine Baptiste, a fisherman. Despite growing up in modest circumstances with limited access to formal education, he exhibited a remarkable drive for success. These ventures laid the foundation for his financial success, enabling him to save and return to Dominica with a vision for business.
Back in his homeland, Baptiste became a pivotal figure in commerce. He established retail stores in Castle Bruce, Canefield, and Calibishie, becoming the island’s largest clothing and household items supplier. His stores were celebrated for their affordability, catering to low-income families and making essential goods accessible to many.

Baptiste’s entrepreneurial ventures extended to agriculture. Understanding local farmers’ challenges, he rented a cargo plane to transport produce to the Virgin Islands, creating a reliable market for their goods. Baptiste founded the Dominica Progressive Party in the political arena, demonstrating his commitment to national development. Although the party did not gain parliamentary seats, his political activities reflected his determination to bring about change.
Later in life, Baptiste became known for his admiration of U.S. President Donald Trump, often wearing attire expressing his support. His outspoken nature and unique political stances made him a notable figure in Dominica’s public discourse.

Baptiste’s life was not without controversy. In 2014, he faced legal issues following allegations of police brutality during an arrest for traffic violations. Despite these challenges, he remained a resilient figure who engaged actively in public life.

Lennard “Pappy” Baptiste died on November 2, 2024, at 85. In recognition of his contributions to business and community, the government granted him an official funeral on December 13, 2024.
