Madras Cloth

Madras Cloth is a vibrant, lightweight cotton fabric central to Dominica’s National Dress, particularly the Wob Dwiyet and Jupe. Its origins trace back to Madras, India, where the fabric was traditionally woven in plaid patterns. The cloth was introduced to the Caribbean during the colonial period and has since become a symbol of the region’s blend of African, European, and Indian influences. In Dominica, it is worn during national celebrations like Creole Heritage Month, Jounen Kwéyòl and Independence Day, and it is especially showcased during events like the Miss Wob Dwiyet pageant, where women showcase their elegance in this traditional attire.
