Morne Jacko

Morne Jacko, named after the revered Maroon leader, Chief Jacko, is a significant historical site in Dominica. Situated within the sprawling landscape of Jacko Flats, in the northwestern part of the island near the village of Belles, it stands as a testament to the Maroon legacy of resistance against colonial rule.

A prominent feature of the extended Layou Valley, Morne Jacko’s rugged terrain bears testament to the indomitable spirit of the Maroons, or Neg Mawon. It was here that these freedom fighters, led by Chief Jacko, established their stronghold, utilizing the challenging landscape to defend their autonomy.

During Emancipation Day celebrations Morne Jacko becomes part of the remembering, with its history serving as a reminder of the Maroon community’s resilience and the enduring fight for freedom.
