Music Lovers Society Band

The Music Lovers Society Band, established in 1951, arose from the colonial authorities’ dissolution of the Dominica Defence Force Band. This led to a group of dedicated musicians forming a new band to preserve and continue the tradition of live musical performances across the island. The group quickly became integral to Dominica’s cultural and civic life, performing at various social functions, dances, and state events.

By 1960, the band came under the auspices of the Dominica Government, becoming the Music Lovers Government Band. Tasked with providing music for national events such as Independence Day celebrations, the band was known for participating in official ceremonies, parades, and festivals, further embedding itself into the national fabric of Dominica’s cultural heritage.

Legacy of the Music Lovers Government Band

Led for over 36 years by the legendary Rueben Hesketh Casimir, the band has been an enduring presence on the island. Casimir was a key figure, ensuring the band’s growth and stability even as it encountered challenges such as the lack of a permanent practice venue. Despite these difficulties, the band continued to thrive, offering public performances and bringing Christmas music to remote communities across the island. Today, the band remains a symbol of Dominica’s rich musical heritage under the leadership of Peter Letang, a skilled musician who took over from his mother, Valena Letang, in 2020.
