Ophelia Marie
Ophelia Marie, often referred to as the ‘Queen of Cadence-Lypso’, is a celebrated singer and songwriter. Born in the capital, Roseau, Marie has become an emblematic figure in Caribbean music, particularly for her contributions to the Cadence Lypso genre, a fusion of Haitian cadence rampa and Calypso.
Marie’s career took off in the late 1970s, when she joined the popular band, Exile One. Her powerful vocals and unique blend of musical influences led to instant recognition, securing her a prominent place in the burgeoning cadence-lypso scene.
Her outstanding contribution to Dominica’s cultural scene has been acknowledged with numerous awards. Notably, she is a recipient of the Sisserou Award of Honour, the highest cultural honor in Dominica, and the esteemed Golden Drum Award.
