Peebles Park, located on Dame Mary Eugenia Charles Blvd in Saint George Parish, Roseau, Dominica, is a prominent public space known for its historical significance and role as a community gathering spot. It is adjacent to Fort Young Hotel, Roseau Cruise Ship Berth, The Dominica Museum and Neg Mawon Emancipation Monument, which are all less than a minute’s walk.
About Peebles Park
Peebles Park is named after Major W.H. Peebles, who served as Dominica’s Chief of Police during the 1920s. It is situated in Roseau, near significant governmental and cultural buildings, including the Dominica Government Headquarters and Old Market Square. The park serves as a green oasis in the city, offering residents and visitors a place to relax and enjoy the outdoors.
Historical Significance
Peebles Park has a rich and complex history. During the maroon wars of the 18th century, it was the site of a platform erected for the execution of revolutionary leader Jean Louis Polinaire on March 7, 1791, witnessed by hundreds of spectators. This dark chapter in the park’s history is a reminder of the island’s turbulent past.
In the 1920s, Major Peebles transformed the area, planting ornamental bushes and flowering trees and installing the old cast iron fountain from the market as a decorative piece. Although the fountain was returned to the market in 1985 during the Old Market’s restoration, Peebles’ efforts significantly enhanced the park’s aesthetics. In 1928, he organized the fencing of the open pasture across the road and erected a war memorial to honor Dominicans and residents who died in the First World War (1914-1918).
Recent Developments
Peebles Park has been revitalized to serve the community’s current needs. In April 2023, the Parliamentary Representative for Roseau Central, Melissa Poponne-Skerrit, officially opened a new children’s playground. This modern playground, funded by the Government of Dominica with support from the People’s Republic of China, features state-of-the-art play equipment designed to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for children. The playground encourages social skills and physical activity among the youth in a secure and welcoming space.
