Petite Savanne
Petite Savanne is a town of about 1,300 people in the Saint Patrick Parish of Dominica. The settlement is situated in a region with steep terrain and inaccessible by road. However, Tropical Storm Erika of August 2015 dealt a serious blow to the town, causing massive destruction occasioned by flooding and mudslides.
Many homes were destroyed in the storm and several lives lost, prompting the Roosevelt Skerrit-led administration to relocate almost 1,000 people from Petite Savanne to Roseau. For nearly three months after the storm, the town became inaccessible and unsafe for visits or habitation and the government had to decide on another permanent settlement for the people.
A new settlement was found for the people and it is capable of accommodating up to 1,000 homes. Many people moved to the new town in early 2016.
