Petro Casa Housing Project in Dominica

The Petro Casa Housing Project in Dominica was launched to address the growing need for affordable and resilient housing, particularly for vulnerable communities. Funded through grants from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the project focused on constructing prefabricated homes, known as Petro Casas, designed for quick assembly and cost-effectiveness.

Affordable Housing for Vulnerable Communities

In 2013, the project saw significant milestones when ten single mothers in Grand Bay received new Petro Casa homes. This initiative highlighted the government’s commitment to improving housing conditions for disadvantaged groups, including single-parent families and low-income households. The homes were designed to offer safe, comfortable living environments at an affordable cost.

Reconstruction for Climate Resilience

Recognising the need for more durable housing solutions capable of withstanding Dominica’s natural disasters, the government reconstructed ninety Petro Casa buildings into resilient concrete homes. These homes were distributed across several communities, including Grand Bay, Dubique, Lilly Valley, Plat Ma Pierre, Chance, Stock Farm, Castle Bruce, and San Sauveur. This reconstruction aligns with Dominica’s national strategy to enhance climate resilience following the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria.

Post-Hurricane Maria Housing Initiatives

In 2018, as part of Dominica’s recovery efforts post-Hurricane Maria, the government announced plans to build 62 new homes and rehabilitate existing Petro Casas in Centre, Grand Bay. This was part of a larger housing project aiming to construct 200 residential units in the region. The initiative prioritized families displaced by natural disasters, with special attention given to single mothers and residents from environmentally vulnerable areas.

Expanding Housing Solutions Nationwide

The government further announced plans to purchase 1,000 additional Petro Casas from Venezuela to expand the project nationwide. This decision not only aimed to meet Dominica’s housing demands but also supported Venezuela amidst its economic challenges. The Petro Casa Housing Project represents a crucial part of Dominica’s efforts to ensure safe, affordable, and resilient housing for all its citizens.
