Picard River
The Picard River in Dominica originates from the northern slopes of Morne Diablotin, the island’s highest peak. It begins its journey in Saint John Parish, above Picard, Portsmouth, on Dominica’s northwest coast.
Picard River’s Journey Through Montane Forests
The river starts in the lush Montane Forests within the Morne Diablotin National Park, adjacent to the Morne Diablotin Trail. It meanders down Segment #11 of the Waitukubuli National Trail, the Caribbean’s longest hiking trail, offering hikers scenic views of the island’s natural landscapes.
Bordering the Syndicate Rainforest Trail
As the Picard River flows northwest, it borders the Syndicate Nature Trail to the west. This area is renowned for birdwatching and is home to the Sisserou Parrot, Dominica’s national bird. The river contributes to the rich biodiversity of this region.
Passing Through Historical Estates
The river passes through historical estates such as Dyer Estate, Ross Castle Estate, and Constant Spring Estate, reflecting the island’s rich agricultural heritage. Upon reaching Picard Estate, the river flows along the Moo Cow Trail, a popular route for nature enthusiasts.
Confluence at Prince Rupert Bay
It then passes under the bridge where Ross Boulevard meets Michael Douglas Boulevard in Portsmouth, providing picturesque views accessible to both locals and visitors. Finally, the Picard River empties into the Caribbean Sea at Prince Rupert Bay, near the town of Portsmouth. This bay is known for its calm waters and is a hub for maritime activities, including fishing and boating.
