Siffleur Montagne Chorale

The Siffleur Montagne Chorale is a renowned folk music group from Dominica. It is named after a bird, the Rufous-throated Solitaire, locally known as the Siffleur Montagne (Mountain Whistler). This bird is celebrated for its melodious calls.

About Siffleur Montagne Chorale

Established in the early 1970s, the Siffleur Montagne Chorale was pivotal in preserving and promoting Dominica’s rich folk music traditions. Under the leadership of Jean Lawrence-Mathurin, the group compiled and performed a repertoire of traditional songs, many of which were at risk of fading into obscurity.

In 1971, the chorale released the album “Island Magic: Folk Songs of Dominica,” featuring tracks like “O Dominica” and “Kashakoo.” These songs highlighted the island’s cultural heritage and natural beauty.

The group’s influence extended beyond music. Their performances fostered a renewed appreciation for Dominican culture, inspiring subsequent generations of artists and cultural groups. In recognition of her contributions, Jean Lawrence-Mathurin was honoured in 2019 for her dedication to preserving Dominica’s folk music.

Today, the legacy of the Siffleur Montagne Chorale endures, serving as a testament to the importance of cultural preservation and the enduring power of music in uniting communities.
