Sisserou Parrot

The Sisserou parrot, also known as the Imperial Amazon, is a majestic and iconic bird that holds great significance in Dominica. As the national bird of Dominica, the Sisserou parrot represents the country’s unique biodiversity and natural beauty. Its remarkable presence has even inspired the creation of the prestigious Sisserou Award of Honour, one of Dominica’s highest honors.

Scientifically known as Amazona imperialis, the Sisserou parrot is renowned for its striking appearance and vibrant plumage. With its green feathers, deep purple-blue head, and distinct red breast, it captivates observers with its visual splendor. As one of the largest parrots in the Amazona genus, measuring around 20 inches in length, it truly stands out among its avian counterparts.

Endemic to Dominica, the Sisserou parrot is found nowhere else in the world. Its name, “Sisserou,” derives from the word used by the indigenous Kalinago people to refer to this remarkable bird. It thrives in the dense rainforests and mountainous regions of the island, showcasing its adaptability to a range of habitats.

Sadly, the Sisserou parrot faces the threat of extinction due to its limited geographic range and habitat destruction. This species thrives in the lush forests of Dominica, particularly in the Morne Diablotin National Park, a mountainous region in the north. Within this area, the upper Picard River Valley on the northwest side of the mountain is a favored habitat for these parrots. Additionally, efforts have been made to reintroduce a small population of Sisserou parrots into the Morne Trois Pitons National Park

Beyond its status as a national symbol, the Sisserou parrot also serves as an important ecological indicator. Its presence reflects the overall health of Dominica’s forests and the well-being of its diverse ecosystem. Safeguarding this remarkable species is essential for maintaining the delicate balance of Dominica’s natural environment.

Dedicated initiatives, such as public education, reforestation programs, and the implementation of strict regulations on hunting and trade, are in place to protect the Sisserou parrot. Collaborative efforts between Dominica’s government and various conservation organizations aim to raise awareness and ensure the preservation of this cherished national treasure.

The Sisserou parrot stands as a powerful symbol of Dominica’s unwavering commitment to environmental conservation and biodiversity preservation. Its beauty, uniqueness, and threatened status serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding our natural heritage for the appreciation and admiration of future generations.
