Soufrière

Soufriere town is located in the Saint Mark Parish of Dominica. With a population of about 1,500 people, Soufriere is the capital town of the parish.

The town is at the southernmost tip of Dominica, meaning it is close to the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Most of the people in the town are fishermen with fishing boats anchored at the shores or navigating the waters in the midst of a booming fishing industry. A few others are farmers cultivating the land for crops sold within and outside the town, while many others are engaged in profitable businesses.

A tourist to Soufriere reported that “I’ve found Soufriere to be a vibrant place. Never bustling, mind you, but always enticingly alive with music, laughter, and the occasional ruckus punctuating a quintessentially colourful and uniquely West Indian atmosphere.”

An 18th century Catholic Church constructed with volcanic stones can be found in Soufriere, and there is the Sulphur Springs hot mineral bath which attracts visitors to the place. There is also the ruins of the L. Rose Lime oil factory which used to be a booming business in the town decades ago. The Soufriere Bay beach is also close by for tourists to explore.

Soufriere is not too far away from Scotts Head village and Galion.
