Waitukubuli Sea Trail
Waitukubuli Sea Trail is a recently established marine trail in Dominica, inaugurated in January 2023. It spans over 40 miles of the island’s West Coast, offering a unique sea kayaking experience in the Caribbean. The trail is named after the original Kalinago word for Dominica, “Waitukubuli,” meaning “tall is her body.”
About the Waitukubuli Sea Trail
The Waitukubuli Sea Trail stretches from Scotts Head in the southwest to Capuchin on the North Coast. This trail allows paddlers to explore Dominica’s dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches, and tropical vegetation. The trail’s diverse environment includes lush green mountains, clear blue waters, and vibrant marine life.
The sea trail provides ample opportunities for kayaking and snorkelling. One notable spot along the trail is Champagne Beach, known for its underwater volcanic vents that create champagne-like bubbles. Paddlers can enjoy snorkelling in this area and experiencing the unique underwater scenery.
Wildlife and Scenic Views
Kayakers can expect to see marine animals, including turtles, dolphins, and colourful fish. The trail also passes by hidden beaches, rock outcroppings, and inlets, making it a visually stunning journey. The scenic views of Dominica’s rugged coastline appeal to the trail.
Community and Support
The development of the Waitukubuli Sea Trail was a collaborative effort involving the Soufriere Outdoor Centre and the Ministry of Tourism. This initiative aims to enhance Dominica’s eco-tourism offerings and attract adventure enthusiasts worldwide. The trail supports local communities by promoting tourism-related activities and providing lodging at guesthouses along the way.
Trail Segments and Itinerary
The trail can be paddled over six days, or kayakers can choose to complete individual segments. Each segment offers a different experience, from calm bays to more challenging open-water crossings. Lodging options along the trail include guesthouses and eco-lodges, ensuring comfort after a day of paddling.
Accessibility
The Waitukubuli Sea Trail is accessible to kayakers of varying skill levels, though some segments may require more experience due to changing weather conditions and sea states. Proper planning and local guides are recommended to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
